Sean Laird is an Edinburgh born and bred techno obsessed DJ and producer who’s been a co-resident at Pulse, the cities institutional techno club since its inception in 2009. His productions exude a dark and crooked yet funky presence that’s meticulously put together to make you lose your mind. And as a DJ, whether it be a warm up or a banging peak time set you’re guaranteed an outrageously brilliant sonic experience every time.
Growing up a lover of hip hop, Sean got his first set of turntables at an early age. Influenced by the raw, menacing sounds of Memphis and Houston, along with the funk of west coast gangsta rap, he learnt to cut and scratch the records he saved up every penny to buy. These were the roots for his passion of DJing and music in general.
Throughout his teens he slowly branched out from this hip hop bubble and immersed himself into the larger world of other music and sounds, listening to everything from metal to IDM to experimental and everything else in between. Artists such as Aphex Twin and Autechre quickly became a major source of inspiration, and that, combined with going out to techno nights, turned an inspiration into an obsession.
Turning his attention to techno, it wasn’t until 2011 that Sean DJ’d at his first gig after winning a competition to play Pulse’s “Edinburgh Techno Gathering.” He eventually became a co-resident at Pulse the following year after a string of breath taking sets showed off his true skills, prompting Darrell Harding to bring him in full time.
Since then Sean has warmed up for the likes of Dax J, Chris Liebing and Len Faki amongst others as the club has grown from strength to strength.
Sean also produces with his friend and fellow Edinburgh DJ Jonny Herd as Lo.pass. Starting off as an experiment in 2015, they’ve combined their respective styles and backgrounds to create a sound heavily influenced through a mix of techno, house and dub. Focusing on raw sub-heavy grooves and rhythms, the pair are constantly evolving and developing their sound to create something unique and forward thinking which has resulted in many well received releases.
