Somatic Responses

The brothers John and Paul Healy have been collectively known as Somatic Responses for over 20 years and they’ve absolutely no plans to stop. These native residents of a small industrial mining community snuggly located in the southwest region of Wales are an industrial electronic duo that truly encapsulate hard-edged, apocalyptic and mind altering techno to its mechanical core.

Veterans of the breakcore scene the two brothers have been creating bonkers techno since the mid 90s. Unlike the break heavy jungle sounds of their contemporaries, Somatic Responses have remained more experimental, sounding closer to the acid-laced ‘Braindance’ outcrop of artists such as Autechre and Aphex Twin.

Operating out of two studios both stuffed with modular, analogue synth & drum machines, as well as using cutting edge software, they incorporate complex, dislocated broken beats, distorted intelligent constructions, fascinating sonic structures, force and sweetness intertwined which encompasses wide open dystopian spaces, vacant echoes and rusty shards.

SR have very high production values and contagious structural focus, you really can’t help yourself get lost in their music. A cliché term indeed but it speaks the truth. Whether they’re creating techno, acid, hardcore, breakcore, industrial or IDM you can be assured it will be of the highest standards imaginable.

Along with appearing on seminal labels including Hymen Records, IST Records, Drop Bass Network and Network23, they set up Photon Emissions in 2010 as an output mainly for their own material and they co-founded the Welsh Modular Alliance in 2014 through a common love of analogue and modular synths, bringing other members together to release some mind blowing mental machinery mangling to the masses.

The WMA members (who’s numbers are steadily growing) jam together on a regular basis, connecting to each other like a hive mind, recording material, learning and sharing their mutual knowledge along the way which SR get a great sense of achievement from.

SR have gigs planned across Europe and the U.S. in the immediate future and there’s also talk of setting up a separate sound design branch of SR (one to watch out for) as they continue to unearth a myriad of underground disturbance of a malignant nature to communique with the dead.
