Niall Beardy –
Whichever way you witness Jerome Hill, it’s safe to say he knows his onions as well as all the other vegetables in the plot. He displays his understanding of funk and jazz, with a refreshingly open mind to rhythm, in a world of 4/4 repitition. The skippy rat-tat-tat pattern over the solid bass on Storm, or the disorientating offbeat ticking bomb timer on Jiba. The cream of the record Breakneck Rhumba has a wonderful afro cuban bass drum pattern, a solid, catchy bassline, inspired breaks and the cherry on the top, the chattering of tambourine cymbals. Listen for melancholic synth accents. An excellent dancefloor motivation bomb. Finally those rascals TSR give Storm a good ruffling of the hair, reworking and embellishing on an already solid skeleton with a tickle, a lick of slap and a smack on the arse out the door. The Voices Of Dissent are audible throughout the 4 tracks as maddening loops of techno circuitry babble from the swarms of binary locust machines gathered in the strobe and smoke filled rooms of clubs. This is an excellent record from the guy you’d have playing at your Maw’s birthday. Buy it. Dance. MON’.
